Graphics 8.5/10
Contrary to what magazine
companies have stated, the
graphics in Sonic 3D Blast for the
Saturn are way better than the
Genesis version. They are fairly
high-res, sharp and beautifully
colored. They are not quite Astal
quality but the CG rendering is
great! There are tons of moving
animals and things in the
background, amazing weather
effects, and smooth animation. The
3D bonus stages are fantastic!
Polygon Sonic is so cool! By the
way, they are similar to the bonus
levels as in Sonic 2 but they're
beautiful and have lots more
obstacles and jumps!
Music 10/10
Remember the fantastic music in
Sonic CD? Well, it's back! The
Red Book audio samples are
absolutely amazing! From
orchestrated music to techno rock
to Christmassy jingles they set the
perfect mood for each stage. The
music is of the same caliber as
Guardian Heroes if not higher!
Sounds 9/10
The sounds are basically the ones
in the Genesis version but crystal
clear. There's not much else to
say.
Gameplay 8.5/10 with standard
D-Pad 9/10 with Analog Pad
The new perspective may take a
while to get used to but when you
do it becomes second nature. It is
much smoother with the Analog
Pad. Sonic has his basic spin-dash
and jump but also has a new Blast
Attack. You need the gold shield
for this but all it does is home-in
onto an enemy for the kill.
Replay Value 7.5/10
The only drawback of the game is
it gets repetitive. The levels are
huge but can get annoying when
you
lose a bird somewhere. Rent the
game first to see if it's the type of
game you'll keep going back to.
Overall 8.5/10
I was skeptical of the game at first
because of the bashing it got in the
magazines but Sonic 3D Blast
does offer some new gameplay to
the old Sonic feel. It is definitely
good enough to keep you busy
until Sonic X-treme comes out!
